Here we are, fellow Me U’s and K-Pop fans. SM Entertainment has given us something we have been waiting so long for. f(x) Luna’s first solo album.
I knew I would like the song the moment I watched the teaser. That’s not just something I’m saying as a biased Me U.
Sure enough, the song is a dance anthem. I haven’t been able to get the electronic-pop tune out of my head ever since the music video was uploaded on YouTube.
Honestly, it’s a been-there, done-that tune but Luna’s strong vocals makes it her own.
Now, on to the engaging music video. I absolutely loved the alternate reality concept of the music video. I personally think it was better and more overt than the similar trope in Tiffany’s I Just Wanna Dance music video.
The music video stars Luna and a handsome male lead, along with Luna’s backup dancers. I love it when the dancers add to the beauty of the video and yet don’t detract from the main lead.
Luna’s love affair with the male lead feels suffocating, almost as if they are confined inside the 4 walls (see what I did there?) of the elevator. Their love seems incapable of leaving the room. Meanwhile, in the alternate reality, they live a lot more freely and intimately.
The animated bits in the alternate reality were beautiful and even captured Luna’s coy and shy expressions. The colours and the overall feel during these sequences were fresh and innovative.
Some of Luna’s expressions in the video were so detached – especially while she was dreaming of the alternate universe. She looked like a doll in these bits, almost as if she were hoping for the alternate world and her hidden wishes to become reality.
The dance sequences were limited but whatever portion I saw of it, I liked. The dance seemed strong and matched the beat of the song even though the Luna in the music video seemed coy and at times, in a trance.
The styling in this video was limited to figure-hugging outfits to flatter Luna’s toned body. I noticed a Moschino outfit (hello, Buttercup!) and a t-shirt with the DHL logo. Apart from those, there were no pieces that were eye-catching. Her makeup was also extremely minimal in the video – just a no-fuss cat-eye look, pretty lashes and glossy lips along with a fringe to frame her face.
I did listen to the entire mini album and I loved every part of it. It contains 6 songs including the title track. The album had the signature f(x) sound we all adore. All of the songs stood out to me but the one I loved the most was ‘예쁜 소녀 I Wish (Pretty Girl)’. Major f(x) vibes on that one.
Most of the album is full of synth-y, electronic songs but Luna’s vocals shine through on each track. She’s definitely among one of the most talented vocalists in the entire industry.
‘Free Somebody’ is not only a treat for Me U’s but it is also an enjoyable album for the regular K-Pop lover.
